IRS Tax Notice Alert

irs-sealAs you have likely heard about in recent news, budget cuts have drastically affected the efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service over the past year. State departments of revenue are in similar or worse financial situations.

We wanted to make you aware of a few trends we have seen during 2015.

  • An increase in tax notices across all entities and for all reasons.
  • An increase in identity theft and fraud issues resulting in filing complications and delayed issuance of tax refunds.
  • Increased difficulty in our ability to communicate with the IRS and state agencies and obtain timely resolution of issues due to their limited resources.

If you receive a notice, please do not panic. If you would like us to respond, we will request from you to sign an IRS and/or State Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative. We will then send a letter response of fact regarding your notice. Additional follow up, research, phone calls etc. may be needed to obtain resolution to your notice.

If you would rather handle the notice yourself, we do request you keep us informed regarding your correspondence so we will have all information when preparing your future income tax returns.

These issues make year end tax planning especially pertinent. Please contact us to find out how we can help.
